Bear Claw….. June 12, 2008

Yes, it’s true…..Our family has had the Jolli-Lodge for over 52 years and this is the first time a bear has visited us!  A family in Carriage House heard a noise late last night and one of the sons went to investigate. He came about 20 feet from a bear standing on it’s rear legs!  After some hissing(by the bear, that is) and a little yelling, the bear went to a tree and thought about climbing and decided against it.  Of course I laughed and asked if it could have been a giant raccoon!  The claw marks proved me wrong!

Leland, and Tigers and Bears OH MY! Hi Greg~just logged on here in Germany, we’ve had rain, sun and there is still snow up in the Alps here in Lindenberg and on the Austrian border. Can’t wait to get up North! I feel like I’m behind in my north county fix. Dad and Dog report major flooding in Des Moines. Hope all is well in Leland and the bear goes on his way~!
    See you all in July

The Alps sound a little more exotic than Leland! A fair amount of rain lately, but nothing like Iowa. Safe travels….Greg

Let me know if the bear hangs around and I’ll try to find one of Davy Crockett’s relatives to come up with us from Tennessee. You do remember that Davy “killed a bear when he was only 3,” don’t you?

Ha….I was squashing ants when I was 1! No signs of our visitor lately.

Did you happen to check the beach to see if he came up via that route or do you think he came from the woods? Guess we won’t be going out at night in August!!

After talking to a few people, it sounds like he/she came down the coast…..Friends 6 miles north of Leland saw him, as well as a few people in Leland. Also, he wasn’t exactly grizzly sized….Estimated at only 130 lbs. Just a wee lad.

I remember when I was a wee lad that our parents would say there were bears in the woods up there just to keep us from adventuring too far. Didn’t work though.

    Parents are always right……Aren’t they?
